Our People
That old saying is absolutely true: the church is not the
steeple, it's the people! And it is just as true here at
Second Congregational United Church of Christ as anywhere else (even
though we do have a rather nice steeple—well actually, it's more
of a tower than a steeple, but that's not the point). We are a vibrant,
active, and diverse community of people gathered together for worship,
fellowship, and ministry and service in the world.
The people that make up our congregation come from all around the city of
Rockford and surrounding communities, even coming from as far as Roscoe,
Belvidere, and Pecatonica. Our congregation is intergenerational: we have
people less than 1 year old and over 100 years old, and at every age in
between. Our people are single, married, divorced, partnered, and widowed.
Straight people, gay people, and lesbian people are among the members of
our community. Some of our people use mobility aids and hearing helps, and
many do not. We have factory workers and lawyers, teachers and bus drivers,
retired people and people looking for their very first job. All in all,
there is marvelous diversity and vibrancy among the people that make up
Second Congregational United Church of Christ.
